Prom Season & Teen Drivers: What Wayne County Parents Need to Know
Spring in Wayne County is a beautiful time of year. The flowers are blooming, the school year is winding down, and prom season is officially upon us. While your teens are focused on finding the perfect prom outfit or planning the ultimate "prom-posal," many parents are thinking about something a bit more practical: safety and insurance.
At Turano Insurance, we’ve helped many local families navigate the milestone of adding a new driver to their policy. As we head into May, here is a quick guide to help keep your teens safe and your premiums manageable during prom season.
1. The "Prom Night" Safety Conversation
Prom night is often a teen's first time driving late at night with a car full of friends. Before they head out toward Honesdale or over to the Poconos area for the big dance, we would like to provide a refresher on the basics:
- The "No-Distractions" Rule: In Pennsylvania, junior license holders are restricted on the number of passengers they can carry. Take this time to remind your teen driver that the more friends in the car the more distractions they have.
- The Zero-Tolerance Policy: This can be a tough conversation, but it is a necessary one. Ensure they know that your "safe ride home" door is always open with no questions asked.
- Curfew Awareness: Remember that PA Junior Licenses have an 11:00 PM curfew unless accompanied by a parent or for specific work/volunteer reasons.
2. How Adding a Teen Affects Your Policy
It is no secret that adding a newly licensed driver increases your premium. Why? Statistically, new drivers are higher risk drivers. However, there are several ways we can sometimes help you offset those costs:
- Good Student Discounts: Most of our carriers (like Progressive, Nationwide, and Travelers) offer discounts for students who maintain a certain grade point average or higher.
- Driver Training Credits: Has your teenager completed a certified driver’s education course? That can sometimes lead to a permanent discount on their portion of the policy.
- Student Away at School: If your teenager is heading off to college in the fall and leaving the car at home, let us know! You might be eligible for a significant rate reduction while they are away.
3. Usage-Based Insurance (Telematics)
Many parents are now opting for "plug-in" or app-based programs frequently known as Telematics. These tools monitor driving habits like braking and speed. Not only does this encourage your teen to drive more safely during prom season, but it can also lead to substantial "safe driver" discounts on your next renewal.
